Monte Schiavo can be described as one of a new wave of wineries in the region of Marche that are embracing modern techniques and the most modern winemaking equipment to unlock the potential of the region’s indigenous Verdicchio grape. Half a dozen different Verdicchio are produced by the Monte Schiavo winery, each of which offers a different character and representation of the region’s landscape.

A single vineyard wine, this Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio sees the Verdicchio grapes destined to form it drawn exclusively from the “Coste del Molino” vineyard in the commune of Poggio San Marcello. Located at 210 metres above sea level, here the sandy soils offer good drainage and naturally lower yields of grapes (around 9 tonnes per hectare).

Vinified at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, this Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio is released quickly after bottling to preserve the freshness and vivacity of the finished product. This 2012 iteration is the current release available to the UK market.

A pale lemon colour in the glass, this 2012 Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio is notably fresher than the oak matured “Le Guincare” (also from Monte Schiavo - reviewed a couple of days ago) on the nose. Aromas of lemon citrus, grapefruit and white peach are all released as this 2012 “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio is swirled and moderate alcoholic legs are suggestive of the declared 13% abv alcoholic content.

Medium bodied and slightly rounded in character on the palate, this 2012 Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio adds apple and pear flavours to those citrus flavours from the nose to form an attractive and fruity flavour profile. A hint of lemon pith and a textural quality derived from a short period of lees-maturation adds depth and interest, whilst a good level of well integrated acidity keeps this “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio refreshingly clean on the finish.

Well suited to drinking from release, this 2012 Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio should be consumed in the next two years.

Score: 87/100 – This 2012 Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio is almost everything that a young Verdicchio should be. A high score and “excellent” classification can be the only result.

Value for Money: 9/10 – Considering that this wine is widely available from £7.50 per bottle in the UK, this 2012 Monte Schiavo “Coste del Molino” Verdicchio looks like yet another wine from Monte Schiavo that is great value.

Detta anche polenta saracena, la polenta bianca è un piatto tradizionale di Ormea, comune in provincia di Cuneo che si trova in Alta Val Tanaro, al confine tra il Piemonte e la Liguria di ponente. La polenta bianca è un piatto povero fatto di patate e farina di grano saraceno.

Le patate sono un alimento fondamentale nella cucina locale: infatti la “patata di Ormea” è un prodotto unico per sapore e consistenza poiché risente positivamente della coltivazione ad alta quota grazie anche a un terreno particolarmente idoneo. L’impiego del grano saraceno, invece, deve le sue origini al passaggio dei saraceni nel X secolo.

La preparazione di questo piatto è piuttosto semplice: bisogna pelare le patate, metterle in una pentola con acqua fredda, fino a coprirle di un centimetro, salare. A questo punto distribuire la farina sull’acqua, lasciando un buco in mezzo che fungerà da camino durante la cottura. Portare a ebollizione per trenta minuti coprendo ma lasciando il coperchio leggermente sollevato, altrimenti è un disastro sui fuochi… io ve lo dico!

Quando le patate saranno cotte, quasi sfatte, amalgamatele con la farina, nella loro acqua di cottura. Per la realizzazione di questo piatto servirebbe il pistun, un pestello grosso di legno ma, se come me non lo avete, un normalissimo schiacciapatate andrà benissimo lo stesso. Alla fine dovrà risultare un impasto omogeneo, senza grumi, molto simile alla polenta tradizionale.

La polenta saracena viene poi condita con un sugo a base di porri soffritti in olio e burro, fino a che diventano morbidi e trasparenti, ai quali si aggiungono i funghi porcini secchi fatti precedentemente rinvenire nell’acqua, latte alla bisogna, e panna per terminare la cottura. Aggiustare di sale e pepe e tenere in caldo fino all’ultimo.

La tradizione vuole che la polenta venga rovesciata su un tagliere e tagliata a fette con il filo, poi su ogni fetta distribuito il Parmigiano Reggiano e infine il sugo di porri e funghi a innaffiare il piatto. Mia nonna invece la serve a cucchiaiate, direttamente nel piatto, schiacciandole per distribuirla meglio, in modo che si formino le irregolarità e tutte quelle conchette che, secondo noi, raccolgono meglio il sugo. Oppure potete aiutarvi con un anello coppapasta (leggermente oliato per sformarla meglio) e servirla a forma di tortino o di torretta.

Lada zal niet deelnemen aan de races in Monza, later vandaag. Dat heeft het team op zondagochtend laten weten. Beide auto’s waren op zaterdag zwaar beschadigd geraakt door een crash tussen Aleksei Dudukalo en James Thompson.


Tijdens de kwalificatie miste Dudukalo zijn rempunt, waardoor hij zijn auto vol in de zijkant van Thompson boorde. Zelf had hij te veel schade aan zijn ophanging om nog te racen, terwijl Thompson zijn veiligheidskooi zwaar was beschadigd.

Italie is een land met vele gezichten maar eigenlijk altijd qua natuur, eten, architectuur interessant.




Napels is het centrum van de Commora, de Italiaanse maffia. Een aantal jaren geleden is hier een geweldige film over gemaakt. Het weerhoud veel mensen naar die regio toe te gaan en natuurlijk is het verstandig voorzichtig te zijn. Onze ervaring is dat het een geweldige stad is, liggende aan de zee. Wel kun je zeggen dat onder Rome de macht van de staat over gaat in de macht van de straat. Niet dat je als toerist er veel last van hebt want voor toeristen is Napels een vriendelijke en interessante stad.




Maar heel letterlijk is de macht van de straat terug te vinden in de verkeersregels. Er staan stoplichten maar die zijn volstrekt overbodig en maar weinig Napolitanen maken daar gebruik van of storen zich eraan.

De Italiaanse energiereus ENI heeft bepaalde activiteiten in de zuidelijke staat Bayelsa, in Nigeria, stopgezet vanwege de frequente sabotage op de pijpleidingen. Dat meldt het bedrijf in een persbericht.


Het betreft de site Swamp Area. Volgens ENI “bereikten de sabotagedaden en het stelen van petroleum een niveau dat de laatste tijd niet meer te houden was, zowel op vlak van veiligheid van de mensen als op vlak van de veroorzaakte schade aan het milieu”. Volgens ENI bedroeg de productie van Swamp Area zowat 35.000 à 40.000 vaten olie per dag, en het verlies door de sabotage bereikte zowat 60 procent van die productie. Sabotage komt vaak voor in de Niger-delta waar dieven olie stelen voor de zwarte markt door gaten in de leidingen te boren. Nigeria is de grootste producent van ruwe aardolie in Afrika en het merendeel van de inkomsten van het land is afkomstig van die industrie. De bevolking is echter straatarm, de regio onderontwikkeld en bijzonder vervuild.

Querelle wordt omringd door vuilniszakken, oud karton en papier maar straalt alsnog klasse uit! Haar donkere en stoere make-up contrasteert mooi met de perzik- en rooskleurige tinten in de achtergrond.
