Vanuit Italië trekt een gebied met sneeuwval richting de Alpen. Aan de zuidflanken van de Italiaanse, Oostenrijkse en Zwitserse Alpen gaat de bewolking overheersen en gaat het op steeds meer plaatsen sneeuwen. De Franse Alpen en de Duitse Alpen hebben vandaag prima weer met geregeld zon en weinig wind. Daar is het vrijwel perfect weer om te skiën en snowboarden.

Frankrijk heeft Cannes en Spanje heeft Málaga: badplaatsen met havens die tot de verbeelding spreken en waar de internationale jetset graag hun badlakens laten plaatsen op de stranden. Want zoiets doe je uiteraard niet zelf als je George Clooney of Julia Roberts heet, dat spreekt voor zich. La bella Italia zou geen bella Italia zijn als ‘wij’ ook niet zo’n pareltje hadden en dat hebben ‘wij’. En wat voor één! Ik blijf nog even in deze kleine maar o zo boeiende provincie Liguria en neem jullie mee naar de parel van de Italiaanse Rivièra. Mag ik u allen voorstellen aan: Portofino.

Linguine al vino rosso (Linguini with Red Wine Sauce)

Ingredients

Serves 4-6 people

400g (14 oz) linguini or other long pasta2-3 garlic cloves, slightly crushed and peeledOlive oil500 ml (2 cups) of a full-bodied red wine (see Notes)Salt and pepperA handful of pitted black olives, perferably Gaeta or nicoise (optional)A few sprigs of parsley, finely chopped (optional)

Directions

Put the pasta on the boil, cook in well salted water until al dente.

While the water is coming to a boil, sauté the garlic cloves in olive oil in a large skillet. When the garlic cloves are just beginning to brown, remove them. Then add the red wine. Let the wine reduce until it is quite syrupy. Just before the wine is fully reduced, add the olives if using.

When the pasta is done, drain it (but not too thoroughly) and add it to the skillet with the wine reduction. Mix the pasta and wine reduction well, and let the pasta absorb the wine almost entirely. The pasta should remain quite moist, so it ‘slithers’ around.

Serve the pasta immediately, if you like with a sprinkling of parsley on top for color (although I actually like the darkness of the dish without it).

Papierwinkel Fabriano te Rome maakte vanwege 150 jaar Italiaanse eenheid een reeks notitieboeken met 150 belangrijke Italianen in kunst, muziek en wetenschap.

Naast de boekwinkels die ik eergisteren noemde, kan ik in Rome nooit wachten tot ik me te buiten mag gaan aan de mooie schriftjes, kaarten, notitieboekjes en andere papierwaren. De mooiste papierwarenwinkel is genoemd naar het stadje in De Marken waar ik gisteren over schreef, Fabriano.

Een bezoek aan Fabriano brengt gegarandeerd de schrijver in iedereen naar boven. In de winkel aan de Via del Babuino in Rome weet je gewoon niet waar je moet kijken – en al helemaal niet wat je moet kopen. Een deel van de winkel is gereserveerd voor notitieboekjes in alle soorten en maten; groot en klein, zwart en felgekleurd, met en zonder extra opbergvakjes en sluitingen, met en zonder opschrift…
