Vanaf januari 2014 zul je geen gigantische cruiseschepen meer tegenkomen in de lagune van Venetië. Regeringsfunctionarissen hebben dinsdag 17 december besloten grote cruiseschepen in de ban te doen.

Het plan om grote schepen uit de lagune te bannen lag er al langer, maar zal nu ook daadwerkelijk geïmplementeerd worden. Na de tragische crash van de Costa Concordia in 2012, waar 32 mensen bij omkwamen, werden in heel Italië de regels aangescherpt. Voor Venetië werd dit lastig, aangezien de cruise-industrie een grote rol speelt in de lokale economie.
Het Piazza del Popolo in de Italiaanse hoofdstad Rome vormt woensdagmiddag het decor voor een vreedzaam protest van de zogenoemde Hooivork-beweging. Duizenden ‘forconi’ zijn uit alle delen van het land richting de hoofdstad getrokken.
