10,000 marshmallows and half a billion sprinkles decorated the huge, 12-square-meter cake prepared to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Michelangelo’s death on February 18. It took British cake designer Michelle Wibowo 168 hours of work to complete the special, actual-size cake commissioned by Cake Angels in honor of the great Renaissance artist. Called “The Creation of Adam,” the cake looked amazing once completed. It was displayed at St Pancras church on Euston Road, London, on February 18.

Though the beaches of Le Marche are relatively unknown to foreign tourists, Italian flock by the thousands to this coastline in the summer. By far, the most sardine-can-packed conditions occurs around the mid-August Ferragosto holiday, when the cities empty out and Italians flee to the beach.
Getting There and Getting Around - Many guides tell you that you need a car to get around Le Marche, but if you are staying on the coast, public transportation is a viable option. The Italian state rail network operates high-speed frecciabianca trains between Milan and Lecce, in southern Abruzzo, passing through Ancona, the main coastal city in Le Marche. From Ancona, regional trains and buses connect to other cities along the coast. If you choose to rent a car when you arrive in Italy, the main coastal highway, Autostada 14, runs along the coast slightly inland, with minor roads connecting to the beaches. A little rougher, though more scenic, Strada Statale 16 runs directly along the coast, just darting inland around the elevated area south of Ancona.
Beach Towns - Eleven of Le Marche’s beach towns have Blue Flag beaches: Civitanova Marche, Fano, Gabicce Mare, Grottammare, Numana, Pesaro, Porto Recanati, Porto San Giorgio, San Benedetto del Tronto, Senigallia and Sirolo. An international non-profit awards this designation to beaches based on their environmental management and education, safety services and superior water quality.
Protected Areas - The Parco Regionale di Monte Conero (parcodelconero.com) near Ancona, is a coastal regional park, includes three towns: Portonovo, Numana and Sirolo. Within the park, undeveloped beaches and their surrounding green hills lure in hikers and beachgoers who prefer seclusion, personal space and stunning vistas.
Dit weekeinde zijn opnieuw delen van de antieke stad Pompeï ingestort die vlakbij Napels is opgegraven. Getroffen zijn een Venustempel en een muur in een necropolis (dodenstad). Dit heeft het Italiaanse persbureau ANSA vandaag gemeld.
Van de tempel van Venus, die reeds gesloten was voor het publiek, vielen verschillende stenen. Zondag raakte bekend dat ook een deel van de meterslange muur rond de necropolis van Porta Nocera is ingestort. Dat gebied werd zondag afgesloten voor de toeristen, de rest van de historische site bleef open.
Minister van Cultuur Dario Franceschini heeft voor dinsdag een spoedvergadering belegd. Sinds 2010 zijn al een tiental gebouwen in Pompeii beschadigd. De site is door de Unesco beschermd als werelderfgoed. Cultuurliefhebbers zijn bezorgd over de toekomst van dit erfgoed, er zijn immers geruchten dat Europees geld voor restauratie verdwijnt in de zakken van de maffia.
Italië heeft een uitzonderlijk groot aantal monumenten en ander cultureel erfgoed, maar er wordt mede door geldgebrek te weinig gedaan aan onderhoud. De Romeinse stad Pompeï werd in 79 met as bedekt bij een uitbarsting van de vulcaan Vesuvius.
