Italy’s major risks commission cautioned Friday that there may be more powerful earthquakes to come following two this week in the country’s mountainous centre and a deadly one in August.“There is no current evidence that the (seismic) sequence underway is coming to an end,” it warned. The National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks(CGR) said that in the wake of the August 24 quake that killed nearly 300 people it had identified three areas at risk for further seismic activity.

What caused Wednesday's earthquake in central Italy?

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

The powerful tremors which shook central Italy on Wednesday were the product of a new earthquake rather than aftershocks from one that devastated the town of Amatrice in August, Italian experts say.“It wasn’t an aftershock, it was a new earthquake,” Mario Tozzi of the national institute for environmental geology and geo-engineering (IGAG) told AFP.“What we do not know is whether it was a dormant section of the Amatrice fault or a parallel structure, a close cousin of this fault,” he added.Tozzi said Wednesday’s ‘double-hit’ quake, in which an initial tremor of 5.5 magnitude was followed by one of 6.1, was typical of the central Appenine mountains.

Central Italy shakes again after another devastating earthquake

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

Central Italy, especially the regions of Marche and Umbria, was hit by two earthquakes and more than 200 aftershocks last night, certainly bringing back awful memories of the disaster that hit the same areas in August. Unlike two months ago, luckily no fatalities have been reported so far, except for a man who died of a heart attack due to the fear and shock. Yet, Marche and Umbria, still recovering from this past summer’s earthquakes that killed 300 people, are struggling to accept the reality of this new, violent blow.
