Palatial building and luxurious imports signal that the Greek founders of Poseidonia in Italy were living high on the hog from pagan pilgrims.The discovery of a monumental building and priceless ceramics imported from Greece in excavations at Poseidonia shows for the first time how rich its Greek founders were when establishing the city in Italy in the 6th century B.C.E.The founders hailed from Sybaris, near the gulf of Taranto. The quantity of Attic red-figure pottery and other luxuries attest to fabulous wealth the city’s Greek inhabitants made, apparently from pilgrims coming to worship at its temples.

Italian town sets new Tiramisù record

The northern Italian town of Gemona has set the record for the largest Tiramisù in culinary history.

Weighing in at 3,015 kilos, the giant coffee-flavoured dessert beats the previous Guinness World Record set in March by over 1,000 kilos.

Around 200 people, including 30 pastry chefs from across the local area helped to make the creamy dessert on Saturday, which consisted of 250 trays of Tiramisù.

Wijnboer en programmamaker Ilja Gort duikt voor zijn nieuwe programma het Italiaanse leven in. In Gort over de grens gaat hij op zoek naar het geheim achter ‘la dolce vita’ (het zoete leven).Dit meldt AVROTROS maandag.“Ik wil erachter komen waarom de Italianen zoveel talent hebben om te genieten”, zegt Gort. “Van lekker eten, van prachtige wijnen en van schoonheid. Wat zegt al dat heerlijks over de Italiaanse ziel - en over het land?"De presentator maakte eerder programma’s als Wijn aan Gort, over Franse wijnen, en Gort à la carte over de Franse keuken. Gort over de grens is vanaf 28 april wekelijks te zien op NPO 2.
