Voormalige topman Eternit ziet straf vernietigd door Italiaans hof van Cassatie

Het Italiaanse hof van Cassatie heeft het oordeel van de procureur-generaal gevolgd en de gevangenisstraf van 18 jaar voor de Zwitser Stephan Schmidheiny vernietigd in de asbestzaak rond Eternit. De voormalige topman was in 2013 schuldig bevonden aan de dood van bijna 3.000 mensen, arbeiders of omwonenden van de fabrieken van Eternit S.pa.a Genua.Het hoogste gerechtelijke Italiaanse orgaan oordeelde dat de feiten waarvoor Stephan Schmidheiny in 2012 werd veroordeeld tot 16 jaar cel, een straf die in beroep in 2013 werd verlengd tot 18 jaar, verjaard waren, aldus het Italiaanse persagentschap Ansa.

Het Italiaanse internetbedrijf Aruba heeft de felbegeerde .cloud-internetextensie op de kop kunnen tikken. Andere geïnteresseerden, zoals Amazon, Google en Symantec, bijten in het zand.Aruba is een Italiaans internetbedrijf dat zich bezig houdt met hosting, clouddiensten, e-mail, datacenterservices en domeinnaamregistraties. En voortaan mag het bedrijf zich dus ook de beheerder noemen van de .cloud-internetextenstie. Op zich is dat misschien niet het grootste nieuws, ware het niet dat ook Amerikaanse internetgiganten als Google (‘Charleston Road Registry’), Amazon en Symantec aasden op de felbegeerde extensie.In totaal waren er zes bedrijven geïnteresseerd in .cloud. Alle zes hadden ze een waterdicht dossier ingediend bij Icann. En dan stipuleert het reglement van de internationale domeinbeheerder dat er moet worden overgegaan tot een veiling, wat volgens ingewijden ook gebeurd is. De partij die daarbij het meeste geld op tafel legt, wint.

In de 4 weken in de aanloop naar kerst (de adventperiode) staat de regio Zuid-Tirol in het teken van de traditionele en originele kerstmarkten. De kleurrijke kerstmarkt in Merano komt vaak voor in de top 10 van mooiste kerstmarkten in Europa, maar ook in Bolzano (een van de grootste in Italië), Bressanone (in het vroegere Prins Bisschoppelijk Paleis) en Vipiteno (op bijna 1000 meter hoogte) kun je terecht om de traditionele kerstsfeer te ervaren. Merano is dit jaar extra bijzonder versierd met het project ‘Kerstbomen in Merano – Collectie 2014’. In dit project hebben kunstenaars de vrije hand gekregen om hun eigen kerstbomen te ontwerpen die verspreid zullen staan over Merano.

Villa di Massenzio is een oude villa, gebouwd in opdracht van de Romeinse keizer Massenzio.

Not a question astronauts on the International Space Station normally have to contemplate, but that is about to change thanks to a new zero-gravity coffee machine being delivered this weekend.The ISSpresso machine is set to boldly go to the orbital station this weekend, carried there by Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.Astronauts on the station will finally be able to enjoy a decent brew thanks to the 20-kilogramme machine designed by famed Italian coffee makers Lavazza and engineering firm Argotec, which specialises in making space food.Cristoforetti, 37, who is also a captain in the Italian air force, “will be not only the first female astronaut from Italy to go into space, but also the very first astronaut in the history of the conquest of space to savour an authentic Italian espresso in orbit,” the two companies said in a statement.The designers say it uses “extraterrestrial” capsules and can operate in “microgravity” conditions.
