Pasta Secca Vs. Pasta all'Uovo | Beat it bitch

See on Scoop.it - La Cucina Italiana - De Italiaanse Keuken - The Italian Kitchen

I think I won’t make a huge mistake if I say that every Italian family eats dried pasta at least once a day; pasta dishes are mainly served for lunch as they are incredibly easy to make and can be prepared between 12.30, when mamas get out of their offices or go to pick up their kids from school, and 13.00 when papas come back from work and the meal is served. On the contrary fresh egg pasta is something made only for specific family meals and occasions; in my personal family experience the making of fresh pasta is related to sunday meals. […]

Italië in ergste recessie sinds Wereldoorlog Twee - De Standaard

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

Ascoli Piceno - Dreaming In Italian

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of Ascoli Piceno. “What? Is that some kind of fish?” Well, no, it’s a beautiful city in the Marche. I had heard the name only as a type of Italian wine. Like all cities of any size it has a title; in this case “city of art”. Probably a bunch of cities have that some self designation. It’s major points of interest in the historic center seems to have been built 500-600 years ago although of course the city is much older. The sense of history is ever present in Italy. People live in houses older than our country. Daily life is lived in an environment of great beauty. Of course when living here it must just seem like background. One doesn’t wander around like an awestruck tourist all the time going about one’s daily life. […]

See on Scoop.it - La Gazzetta Di Lella - News From Italy - Italiaans Nieuws

Ancona and the Cardeto Park | Seeking Science along the Adriatic Coast - Part 6

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

I had part of a day to spend in Ancona, an Italian port city on the Adriatic Sea. Ancona does not appear in many guide books, perhaps because the authors think it has little touristic interest. Yet, right across the street from my hotel, I discovered an entrance to Parco del Cardeto, the largest urban reserve park in Ancona, officially opened in 2005. This 35-hectare park consists of the beach and cliffs along the Adriatic coast from Ancona’s port and old town section towards the south.

As you wander through the park, strategically-placed signage gives you hints about the human and natural history of the area. The cliffs consist of Miocene marl, 17 million year old sea shells mixed with clay and volcanic ash. And just like in our Rocky Mountains, the layering of the sediments exposes rock of varying permeability, causing plants to grow differentially.

The prevalence of wild thistle in the park has been a source of controversy. Silybum marianum grows wild and is a major food source for the goldfinch. As the thistles are replaced with short landscaped grasses, the abundance of the finch decreases, leading to a debate in how best to keep the park natural yet enjoyable. As a side note to this, the milk of this wild thistle was used in mediaeval times to deal with problems of the liver and urine retention. Amazingly, now the milk is of some pharmacological interest in the production of medications related to control of hypertension.

There is a great deal more of interest in this park. It was obvious to me that people have been accessing this beach long before it was a protected park. Caves dug over the centuries by fishermen are in still in use today. The plankton at the base of the marine food system leads to an abundance of harvest from the sea. I only had a couple of hours to explore this area, and would like to return.

On The Rise: Wines of the Marche and Abruzzi

See on Scoop.it - Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d’Italia

With its pebble beaches, dramatic valleys, rolling hills and tall mountains, the eastern central coast of Italy is a land of rugged and untamed beauty. At its heart sits the wine regions of Le Marche and Abruzzi, a region that is known as one of the greenest places in Italy.

With more wildlife sanctuaries and conservation land than anywhere else in Europe, much of this region is unkempt wilderness – the literal green heat of the entire Mediterranean. While the heights of the inland Apennine foothills have a much cooler, temperate climate, it’s the coastal areas where one can find the majority of people and vineyards.

These coastal villages and cities have been the home of a unique cuisine and winemaking tradition that dates back millennia, some even predating the founding of Mother Rome! Like many of Europe’s winemaking regions, Le Marche and Abruzzi have seen their fair share of trial and tribulations over the past century. During the Second World War, many of this area’s vines were destroyed by one man’s greed – Benito Mussolini. With dreams of making Le Marche and Abruzzi the center of his new Italy’s industrial power, Mussolini ordered many of this lands vineyards ripped from the soil to make way for factories and cities. Fortunately, much of this grand scheme never came to fruition, and once again Abruzzi and Le Marche are emerging as major players on the international wine scene.[…]
