Curators of ancient city of Pompeii say they have received “hundreds of packages” from tourists returning stolen artefacts accompanied by notes “expressing regret”Preservation of the ancient city of Pompeii has received a welcome boost from guilty thieves who have returned artefacts they stole from the popular tourism attraction.In October, a Canadian woman made headlines around the world when she personally returned to hand back a 2,000-year old fragment she had stolen from Pompeii on her honeymoon 50 years ago.

Italy’s first female astronaut will be dining this Christmas on cutting-edge meal prepared by aerospace engineering firm.Spare a thought for those far from home this Christmas – not least Italy’s first woman in space, Samantha Cristoforetti, one of the six astronauts orbiting the Earth at 17,200mph in the International Space Station (ISS).While Cristoforetti will miss out on her traditional family meal, she will have the consolation of cutting-edge cuisine prepared especially for her in a pristine factory on the edge of Turin.The pre-packed dishes were produced at a small aerospace engineering firm, Argotec , and have been the subject of almost as much experimentation as the spacecraft’s pressurised modules, robotic arms and solar arrays.

The owner of an Italian travelling circus has been charged with the use of false documents after it was discovered that two pandas in his show were, in fact, chow chow puppies that had been dyed.A spokeswoman for the forestry corps, which in Italy deals with many of the offences involving animals, said audience members were encouraged to pay to have their photograph taken with the fake pandas. “It happened regularly before the start of the show,” she said.
