Voor de enorme veiligheidsoperatie zijn drieduizend politieagenten en militairen ingezet.De zorg voor de veiligheid in en rond het Vaticaan is enorm, omdat de viering zich vier dagen lang over vijf grote evenementen uitspreidt. De eerste grote gebeurtenis is vrijdagavond al, als paus Franciscus vanaf het Colosseum de Via Crucis loopt. De kruisweg van Jezus voert tijdens een processie naar de Palatijnse heuvel. Tijdens de optocht stopt de paus op veertien plaatsen voor een gebed. Gelovigen dragen lichtjes mee.
