2010 Fattoria Colmone della Marca Bianco del Moro

Tasting Notes:


Eyes: clear, water white with peachy tingeNose: clean, low to med- intensity, youthful to developing, vanilla, spice, floral, subtle woodiness, appleMouth: dry, med body, med- to med acid, med+ alcohol, med- intensity, med- length, bitter citrus rindAll in all: Good quality; drink now.

A clear, almost colourless wine. I wasn’t sure whether or not the hint of peachiness in the wine was due to the red stains in the wine glasses we were using or because of some strangely coloured grape. Like Gewurztraminer.

The nose was weird. I captured little to no fruit – just an ethanol-like spice, a slight neutral vanilla fruitiness, and neutral wood. Further smelling revealed a flutter of apples and more notably, nuts. Vague floral notes. Not aromatic. A generally restrained character, and I determined that it was Old World – no doubt that this wouldn’t be from the realm of the New. Two colleagues guessed Chenin – notes of wet wool and river stones were mentioned.

Grüner, is that you? Maybe. Not enough acidity or life. Grüner is like that talkative friend. This wine is pretty closed.

Similar on the palate: restrained yet round, but not oily. A mineral and a subtle tongue-coating citrus pith flavour almost cancels out the medium acidity, but isn’t cloying because there’s not much to cloy, except a slight alcohol warmth. The alcohol is not low.

By no means did this wine seem anything that fit the diverse French moulds, nor the aromatic whites of Spain and Germany. Despite the lack in crispness, Italy seemed to be the one, with the all-neutral everything. Apparently correct.

Looking back at my grape chart, guesses of Fiano or Falanghina (whatever the hell that is) probably would’ve been the closest (due to mere descriptions). My guesses started with Arneis, then trailed on to Vermentino, Verdicchio, Pinot Grigio, Trebbiano, and then from there I attempted to just name all the white Italian grapes I knew. Chardonnay-like, even.

Who’d’ve thunk that this would be a Sangiovese (a red grape) without the red?! Crazy. Nerdy, even. Weird, especially because red Sangiovese typically has an undeniable aromatic savoury cherry character. Skins are important! Push down those grape skins. Pump them over. Oh, yes.

It’s funny, because I always jokingly guess white Sangiovese whenever I’m blinded with a white, but this is the one time it took me forever to get it.

I’ve had this wine be described to me before: memorable descriptions of red fruit have me believe that this wine is at it’s peak or over the hill (or that the taster might’ve been primed to pick up red fruit). If I was blindfolded, I’m pretty sure it would’ve been hard for me to guess the colour of the wine. In this wine, secondary characteristics reign!

If this wine isn’t weird to you, it should be. Sangiovese without the red is sort of like a hot dog without the bun, a pizza without tomato sauce, or a college party without alcohol. Doable. Tricky. Atypical.

Interesting? Assolutamente. Worth it? Maybe a year or so ago. Elegant and inoffensive at best.

Voor mannen die altijd een romantisch filmpje pakken met de dame angstvallige vermijden, is er nu een leuke escape en een kans om makkelijk te scoren. In de romantische comedy ‘Valentino’ met cabaretier Najib Amahali in de hoofdrol, kun je namelijk genieten van een hoop Maserati-vertier. De grappige Marokkaan speelt een verkoper van het merk met de drietand en doet dit in prachtige showroom van Louwman, voorheen Hessing. Je weet wel, die imposante glazen sculptuur langs de A2 bij Utrecht. Deze Nederlandse film was eigenlijk een leuk ideetje voor rond Valentijnsdag, maar gaat volgende week pas in première.

Only the innovative nature of the Italians can turn inexperience and a huge miscalculation into a fashion statement. And only those Italians from Tuscany knew how to make it a statement that would last through the test of time.

Wool has been a constant, thriving economic force in Italy as far back as the Etruscans, Romans and the Medici Family. It is a well known fact that the banking houses in Florence built their wealth on the wool industry. The Casentino Valley, where the Arno river starts its trek to Florence, was perhaps one of the largest suppliers of high quality woolen products in Tuscany.

In the late 1800’s they sought to further commercialize their natural resource, and a “mantelline per cavalcature” was introduced to the Florentine market. This was basically a thick, water resistant blanket used to cover, keep warm and protect work animals that hauled large loads.

Traditionally, this cover was made in a deep red – but due to an error when they mixed the chemicals to soften the wool, the color came out a vivid orange. Like most trends, it was a twist of fate that turned this rough cloth with its unique color, fashionable.

The “panno Casentino” was admired by illustrious names such as Baron Ricasoli and the opera composers Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. The result was that this brightly colored felted wool was fashioned into a double breasted jacket complete with a fox fur collar which became a very Italian symbol of wealth and prestige of the upper echelon.


A reputation that is still widely recognized in Italy today.

Je zou er bijna aan voorbij lopen, maar in de wijk Trastevere, tussen de Ponte Mazzini en Ponte Sisto wijzen twee bordjes naar het ietwat verborgen gelegen Villa Farnesina. Het voormalige buitenhuis van de steenrijke bankier Agostino Chigi (1465-1520) en een van de indrukwekkendste monumenten van de liefde in Rome.


Chigi is van adellijke afkomst en de geldschieter van voorname Italianen, waaronder Paus Alexander VI, maar ook van de grote schilders uit zijn tijd, zoals Raffaello Sanzio. Zijn villa moest een eerbetoon worden aan feest, liefde en vrolijkheid.

Italië wil Costa Concordia naar haven slepen

De Italiaanse regering heeft vrijdag toestemming gegeven om het gestrande cruiseschip Costa Concordia naar de haven van Piombino in Toscane te slepen, waar het schip kan worden gesloopt.


De Italiaanse dienst burgerbescherming verwacht dat het schip in september kan worden verplaatst.


De Toscaanse leider Enrico Rossi verklaarde blij te zijn met het besluit. Hij noemde Piombino een ‘economisch en ecologisch gezien verstandige keuze’, vanwege de ligging van de haven.


Een lid van het provinciebestuur zei echter dat het wegslepen van de Costa Concordia door de keuze voor Piombino vertraging kan oplopen, omdat de haven moet worden gemoderniseerd.


De Costa Concordia liep in januari vorig jaar op een rif bij het eilandje Giglio voor de Toscaanse kust, waarna het schip kapseisde. Bij de scheepsramp vonden 32 mensen de dood.

De voormalige Argentijnse voetbalster Diego Armando Maradona wil dolgraag de nieuwe paus ontmoeten. Dat liet Maradona woensdagavond via zijn advocaat weten.




‘De God van het voetbal is een Argentijn en nu hebben we ook de paus’, verkondigde Maradona, daarmee doelend op zichzelf en niet de huidige ster van het mondiale voetbal, Barcelona-speler Lionel Messi. ‘Ik hoop dat als ik eens naar Italië kom, ik een ontmoeting met hem kan hebben.’



Maradona ontmoette eerder al eens paus Johannes Paulus II: ‘Een onvergetelijke emotie.’

When meeting new people in Italy, you will most likely find yourself asking either ‘tu come ti chiami?’ or ‘Lei come si chiama?’ Both mean ‘what is your name’ but the first version is informal, and can be used with people of the same age or younger, and the second version is formal to be used with people of an older age or in a business / formal situation. Tu means you formal and Lei means you informal.

If in doubt, use Lei and you may be invited to use Tu with the expression ‘Diamoci del tu?’ (Shall we use the informal with each other?)

Saltimbocca betekent letterlijk ‘spring in de mond’ – het gerecht is zo onweerstaanbaar lekker, dat het bijna als vanzelf in je mond belandt.


Al die kunst maakt hongerig en aangezien we hier in Rome tot nu toe alleen oog hebben gehad voor de Venetiaanse schilders, besloten we ons eerst maar eens te storten op een echt Romeins gerecht: saltimbocca alla romana.

Oeps! Italiaanse bisdom feliciteert met Scola verkeerde 'paus'

Het was voor zowat iedereen een verrassing dat de Argentijn Jorge Mario Bergoglio tot nieuwe paus werd verkozen en niet de Italiaanse topfavoriet Angelo Scola. Dat leidde tot een pijnlijke fout van de Italiaanse bisschoppenconferentie. Per mail verspreidde het bisdom felicitaties voor de nieuwe paus, maar in de hoofding stond wel de naam van Scola in plaats van die van Bergoglio. Schijnbaar hielden de Italiaanse bisschoppen hun wensen (Scola lag volgens de Italiaanse media na de eerste stemronde flink op kop) voor werkelijkheid. Eén troost voor de Italiaanse natie: de Argentijn Bergoglio is de zoon van Italiaanse inwijkelingen en zo toch een ‘halve’ Italiaan.
