Ik kende Pisa eigenlijk alleen van die torre pendente. Ik wist dat er een murales van Keith Haring is en dat er vroeger een maritieme republiek Pisa bestond, die constant in gevecht was met Genua. Mijn Andrea, een ingegnere navale, wist mij te vertellen dat Pisa in die tijd, als belangrijke zeemacht, aan de zee lag. Nu niet meer, want de rivier de Arno heeft een berg puin meegevoerd dat aan de kust is neergeslagen en zo een steeds bredere kuststrook heeft gevormd.In september was ik eindelijk voor het eerst echt in Pisa. Het vliegveld was jaren geleden eens mijn tussenstop, maar nu ging ik regelrecht op de scheve toren en de murales af. Maar tussen de ene bezichtiging en de andere ontdekte ik dat Pisa een veel interessantere stad is dan ik altijd had gedacht.
