The decision filled the prosecutor’s law offices, nestled next to the old prison in the ancient Umbrian hill town, with painful and jarring memories.
Memories of the 11-month trial in 2008, in which he led his legal team to secure the American student’s conviction for the brutal killing of her British roommate Meredith Kercher.
However, this was only after being sucked into an international maelstrom in which he was pilloried by a vicious American-led media campaign that saw Italy’s judicial system likened to that of a “Third World” country.
