Cruise ship’s second in command tells Italy court he feared Capt Francesco Schettino might attempt suicide during chaotic evacuation after Giglio shipwreck The captain of the Costa Concordia looked as though he might commit suicide as he surveyed the panic-stricken evacuation of his capsized ship from the rocky shore of Giglio island, a court in Italy heard on Tuesday. Dimitrios Christidis, the second in command of the giant cruise liner, said he was concerned for Capt Francesco Schettino’s mental well-being after the ship capsized, forcing 4,200 passengers and crew into a terrifying night-time evacuation which cost 32 lives.
