Producers of cult Italian detective series Inspector Montalbano threaten to leave Sicily and decamp to mainland region of Puglia ‘because of no support from regional government’It is synonymous with Sicily, but the producers of a cult Italian detective series have threatened to decamp to the region of Puglia after complaining of a lack of tax breaks and other incentives from the island’s government.Inspector Montalbano, which is based on the best-selling detective novels by the Italian writer Andrea Camilleri, has achieved worldwide acclaim, including in the UK where it is broadcast by the BBC.The threat to move filming to Puglia, which has a similar coastline and fishing ports as those used in Sicily, has drawn in MPs and spooked Sicily’s regional government, which has seen a boom in tourism in the south-east of the island where the series is filmed.
