It’s become something of a “thing” for any automaker to send the first example of a hotly anticipated new model across the auction stage, much like a sacrificial lamb, to be purchased by someone wielding entirely too much excitement for the car and too much money. Okay, so maybe the buyer is the hapless lamb, but that’s beside the point; typically, it’s all for a good cause—the proceeds go straight to charity—and huge auction prices bring free press and warm fuzzies for all. Ferrari followed the formula a few days ago, selling off the first 458 Speciale A for $900,000 at a luxe event coinciding with the F60′s debut in Beverly Hills.
