Abandoned Bridge In Italy Transformed Into A Futuristic Vacation Resort

Rather than demolishing the abandoned viaduct in Salerno-Reggio Calabria, Italy, the Solar Park South ran an international competition to award the best design that transforms the bridge into a functional structure. One of the entries turns the old highway into a vertical holiday complex that uses as little construction material as possible.

The team consists of Samuel Nageotte, OFF architecture, and PR architect. They envisioned the area to be the perfect vacation spot as it’s surrounded by mountains and overlooks the sea. The concept structure uses a “pile and deck” technique where residential and commercial spaces can be stacked on top of each other. Due to the proximity of Mt. Etna, the whole complex could also be geothermally powered.
