Italy’s prime minister Enrico Letta declared a state of emergency. “This enables us to immediately be able to use rules for more rapid interventions and set aside an initial sum for the very first emergencies that emerged during the night,” he said.
Franco Gabrielli, the head of Italy’s Civil Protection Department, said the majority of the victims were from the province of Olbia; others were from the province of Nuoro and Oristano. Gabrielli said the amount of rainfall was equivalent to six months of normal precipitations.
