Petition signed by more than 60 celebrities, architects and writers is sent to the Italian government calling for huge cruise ships to be prohibited from entering Venice’s lagoonSir Michael Caine and Julie Christie are among a group of celebrities who have signed a petition calling for giant cruise ships to be banned from Venice.Concern over the threats posed by the towering cruise ships was heightened in January 2012 when the 115,000-tonne Concordia rammed into Giglio, off the Tuscan coast, leading to a chaotic evacuation which claimed the lives of 32 passengers and crew.The ship is due to be towed away from the island to the port of Genoa, where it will be scrapped, on Wednesday.
