ROME — President Giorgio Napolitano resigned on Wednesday, and the intense political maneuvering to choose his successor may become a minefield for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.For almost nine years, Mr. Napolitano, 89, has been a vital anchor of political stability in Italy. When his original seven-year term was ending in 2013, the members of Parliament and regional delegates responsible for choosing his successor deadlocked in ballot after ballot, until he reluctantly agreed to be re-elected, the first president of Italy to do so.
