We, Venetians, have seen some really bad behaviour this summer: people sunbathing on the banks of the canals as if they were on the Venice Beach in California and not Venice the City of Art in Europe; people taking a dip in bathing suits in the canals of the city (may I remind here that there is NO sewage system in Venice, so they swam in some very-very dirty waters). There were foreign families sitting in the middle of Saint Mark’s Square and our little campi (Venice little squares) having full picnics with little camping stoves! There were disgusting human beings who decided that Venice is an open air toilet and you can practically relieve yourself in any corner of the city, even in rubbish bins in front of everyone (OK, we do not have a sewer system, but we do have toilets!!!). After all this we, Venetians, have decided to take things in our own hands and try to stop tourists treating our amazing city like trash.

Today I like to share this light vegetarian pasta dish with grilled aubergines. You can grill the aubergines in a few minutes on a griddle pan and finish off the dish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. A few cherry tomatoes and rocket leaves will make this a very summery and fresh dish.

It is August, the month of outdoor summer parties, barbecues and picnics. And this is the time of year when I am lucky enough to be blogging from my garden in Italy, have the odd swim in the sea, eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg and be inspired with new recipes.Like this one which I spotted in a magazine my mum bought and never managed to read. The kitchen resembles a hot sauna. All she seems to be doing is making passata every single day. There are so many tomatoes this year and it would be a shame if they went to waste!

A minister sunbathing topless has scandalised Italy. What does it say about the Italians? The gossip magazine Chi has just run a cover photo of Stefania Giannini, the Italian education secretary, sunbathing topless on a beach in Tuscany. There she is, lying on her back, beneath the relentless Mediterranean sun, eyes closed and breasts glistening. The photo has caused a summer media storm in Italy: it is the first time, so they say, in the nation’s history that a female government minister has gone topless in public – or at least got caught. She is a Left-winger to boot and so, for once, Silvio “Bunga Bunga” Berlusconi has nothing to do with it. Where will it end?
