It’s another day of bright blue sky and crisp cool breeze. The sunlight bounces of stately marble columns and neatly kept, yellow painted buildings alike. Sometimes it looks like an Italian city, with its regular fronted modern concrete. Other times Trieste looks as it was, one of the main cities and principal seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

A mix of peoples has always lived here, since its location at the head of the Adriatic made it, and makes it still, an ideal jumping point into ‘MittelEuropa’. So what makes it special now is not so much the fact that it is ‘politically’ Italian, but that the entire culture and style of the city is international – more so than its opposite number Genova, a little like Istanbul is today.

On the hills behind Trieste, those heading westwards into Italy, you will stumble across a small village called Prosecco. Yes, that Prosecco! This is where it is first came from, though the sparkling Prosecco most of us joyfully drink comes from the hills around Treviso. Just a short distance away from Prosecco is a complex of underground grottoes you can visit, one cave being the biggest in all Europe that is open to visitors.

Not far from Trieste is Miramare, one of the summer palaces of the Habsburg monarchs, a delightful confection that juts out into the sea like a bright white fairy story. Only the story of Miramare is a sad one, one of many that befell old ranz Josef in the dying years of the Austrian Empire.

The city is bright and happy now though, with its bustling business, its sense of no borders and the dynamic social life that follows in its wake.

Lots to see and do, so go visit one of the very corners of Italy!

Columnist Paul Brill ziet hoe de Italianen in hun weg naar de stembus klem zitten tussen nationale politieke mores en culturele tradities enerzijds en Europese regelgeving anderzijds. Kandidaat Monti, volgens The Economist de beste optie, maakt geen schijn van kans de grootste te worden.

Er zullen dit weekeinde de nodige schietgebedjes worden gepreveld in diverse Europese hoofdsteden. Ook door seculier ingestelde politici, onder het motto: Rome is wel een Onzevader waard. Want Europa krijgt er een enorm probleem bij als de Italiaanse verkiezingen van zondag en maandag de oude vos Silvio Berlusconi weer aan of dichtbij de macht brengen.

Het is een scenario dat twee maanden geleden nog ondenkbaar leek. In de peilingen stond de partij van Berlusconi ver achter op de centrum-linkse coalitie van Pier Luigi Bersani. Maar met een even gloedvolle als onbeschaamde campagne, zoals alleen hij die kan voeren, heeft de 76-jarige ex-premier zich toch weer naar de voorgrond weten te dringen. Een heuse zege lijkt nog steeds een brug te ver, want il Cavaliere heeft het de laatste jaren wel erg bont gemaakt. Maar je weet het maar nooit in Italië, en het zou al verontrustend genoeg zijn als hij een resultaat boekt dat hem parlementaire hindermacht oplevert.

Een van de meest onberekenbare factoren in de Italiaanse parlementsverkiezingen van zondag en maandag, de blogger, komiek en populist Beppe Grillo (64), heeft kort voor de stembusgang een mensenmassa op de been gebracht op het plein voor de basiliek van San Giovanni in Rome. Volgens Grillo waren er vrijdag 800.000 mensen om hem heen verzameld en er hadden er naar zijn idee meer bij gekund.

Grillo voert de Beweging 5 Sterren aan. De bijeenkomst was aan het slot van zijn campagne ‘de Tsunami Tour’. De blogger mijdt de traditionele media en keert zich veel tegen Europa en de bezuinigingen. Hij ontkende vrijdag echter Europa de rug toe te keren en zei bijvoorbeeld en referendum over de euro te willen.
