The world famous costume party returns to Venice this year, and we’ve been looking to which balls, parties and galas are not to be missed. The hardest part will be choosing which ones to go to…
1. Bauerleque Party at the Hotel Bauer, 1 February
Prince Maurice Agosti welcomes guests impersonating Casanova into the Bauer’s ballroom reception where a renaissance-style buffet awaits. Entertainment comes in the form of contortionists, acrobats, music and burlesque dancers before an evening of colourful gourmet food from citrus fruit steamed swordfish to roasted suckling pig.
2. The Best of Il Ballo del Doge at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, 2 February
The distinctive pink floral 15th Century Venetian Gothic Palazzo Pisani Moretta plays host to this year’s Il Ballo del Doge. This event is a re-enactment of the most celebrated performances of past editions and was inaugurated due to high public demand. This particular party is the ideal introduction for first-timers to get a full appreciation and flavour of the Venice Carnival.
3. Al Ridotto Gala Dinner and Ball at Hotel Monaco and Grand Canal, 2 February
The musical “Memories of Giacomo Casanova” narrated by a young actor playing the legendary lothario welcomes guests arriving into Ridotto Hall. Later in the evening Dance Masters will lead group dances in the dazzling Palazzo Dondale following cocktails and a sumptuous gala dinner.
4. The Serenissima Grand Ball Opera at Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, 2 February
An authentic 14th Century palace complete with Gothic façade, elegant quadriform windows and entirely lit by candles sets the scene for this homage to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The opera Don Giovanni follows a gala dinner before the real party starts at midnight with live music and dancing.
5. Tiepolo Ball at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta, 7 February
Step off a private gondola on the Canal Grande near the Rialto Bridge and onto the steps of the Palazzo Pisani where the magic of 18th Century Venice awaits. The Tiepolo Ball is the official ball of the carnival and one of its most celebrated events. Marvel at the interior Baroque design and enjoy cocktails in a candlelit setting with mimes and singers before a grand feast topped off with two orchestras seeing you through until the early hours.
6. Il Ballo del Doge: It’s All About Amore at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, 9 February
The theme of the 20th edition of Il Ballo del Doge is spread out on the three floors of the majestic Palazzo Pisani Moretta. Under the stewardship of Antonia “Queen of Masquerade Balls” Sautter, Romance is located on the ground floor with Passion on Secondo Piano Nobile and Eros on Primo Piano Nobile.
7. Mascheranda Grand Ball at Palazzo Pisani Moretta, 10 February
Organised by Tragicomica masks and costumes workshop, the Mascheranda balances authenticity and razzle dazzle with its great Mask Ball in the Main Saloon. Guests are welcomed with aperitifs, spoiled with a grand gala dinner and entertained with live music and performances from Comici dell’Arte.
8. Gran Carnival Gala at the Luna Hotel Baglioni, 9 February
A warm fireplace and traditional Venetian canapés await guests in the reception of Venice’s renowned Luna Hotel Baglioni. The event commences with a comic sketch and Bellini cocktails before being whisked to the lavish Marco Polo Ballroom when the carnival is brought into the modern era with DJs playing 70s’ and 80s’ tunes late into the night.
9. The Dogaressa Grand Ball Opera at Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, 9 February
The Dogaressa Grand Ball Opera plays homage to iconic Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. Following a cocktail reception, gala dinner and live music, guests will be treated to a performance of the comic opera ‘Elixer of Love’ about a love potion that it transpires is in fact a cheap bottle of wine.
10. The Sea’s Bride at Palazzo Ca Zen, 9 February
Atelier Marega presents the Great Masquerade Ball, the Sea’s Bride. International artists provide entertainment during a cocktail reception followed by a gala dinner. The event features a late night DJ and an open bar. Get a little too carried away with the party and there is a lounge zone where you can relax and take in the ambiance.
