CISTERNINO – The end of the world is near according to Maya. But there is a place, a strip of land, in Italy, where you can escape the terrible prophecy. It is Cisternino and surroundings.

Such optimism comes from the interpretation of Mayan prophecy theorized by followers of the Indian hermit Babaji who founded in Salento an ‘asharm’, a sanctuary to meditate and spread the word of universal brotherhood. On December 21 Itria Valley, that includes the towns of Cisternino, Ceglie Messapica, Ostuni and Martina Franca, on the border between the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto, will survive the planetary catastrophe. Large crowds are expected in Cisternino. We don’t know if it’s because they want to seek refuge or visit the town. The fact is that the mayor Donato Baccaro, both serious and humorous, confirmed the increase in bookings. “I’m glad people are talking about Cisternino all over the world as a place of salvation. Apparently, there will be a significant number of tourists. We will organize something characteristic, in addition to the traditional Christmas market”, the mayor said.

Among the supporters of the theory there are also the American director Gregory Snegoff and his wife Fiorella Capuano who founded the ‘first Giardino di pace del nuovo tempo’ in the nearby Ceglie Messapica, a place of meditation and study between olives, cherries and nuts.
