There are many unsolved mysteries in Le Marche , although the most important affect a small circle of academics. Some of the most curious reach the general public, lighting hypotheses and fantasies.

One of these mysteries that has tickled the curiousity of ordinary people and authorities of the southern Marche, so far as to be used as a symbol of the territory, was the Anellone Piceno (The Picene Big Ring).

The picene big ring is a typical object of the feminine graves of the VI century b. C. in the Cuprenses necropolis, the actual territory of Cupra Marittima and Grottammare, two of the most beautiful Coastal Towns of the Region. There are two types big rings, the first has four or six rhomboidal protuberances, the second has four or six round protuberances.

These objects have a diametre ranging from 8 to 22 centimetres and a weight ranging from 200 grammes to 2 kilogrammes.

Recent studies have included the big rings in the ornaments, proof of the fine taste of a feminine elite. Some experts consider these objects as a symbol of fertility, since they were placed on the lap of the dead. Finally others, associated the rings to the cult of the goddess Cupra, highest god of the picene pantheon and goddess of beauty and fertility. According to this last hypothesis the dead women have to be identified as follower of a sacerdotal caste, devoted to the cult of the goddess Cupra. Furthermore these rings are always with a reach outfit, that is symbol of a privileged status in the society.

These big rings have been discovered for centuries by modern populations, and some of them were found on the doors of the ancient villages used as knockers.
